Continental Airlines is ready to implement cross-strait weekend charter flights, and preparations for a July 4th tourist group departure to Taiwan are complete. This group will consist of over 600 tourists; and Nanjing, as a new stop for charter flights, will hold an official flight ceremony. Fan Liqin, spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, reported this information to Beijing Times on June 25.
Fan said that as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen have already welcomed cross-strait holiday charter flights, they will organize a ceremony related to mainland residents travelling to Taiwan. Since Nanjing is the new destination for cross-strait charter flights, on July 4 an initial flight ceremony of mainland residents travelling to Taiwan will be held. The schedule and attending guests are still being planned.
Fan said that tourists on the July 4 flight mainly come from Beijing, Jiangsu, Fujian, Guangdong and Shanghai.
In response to one reporter's question about travel restrictions to Taiwan, Fan said that there currently were none. People can sign up for a tour at travel agencies. Because of the large volume of applicants, travel agents may use a lottery system to arrange tours and determine the size of the group.
