SHANGHAI: Taipei yesterday became the latest city to sign up for the Shanghai 2010 World Expo.
Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng and visiting Mayor of Taipei Hau Lung-bin witnessed the contract signing, which will allow Taipei to set up two pavilions within the Expo's Urban Best Practices Area.
The popularization of wireless broadband, and the reduction of urban waste and recycling will be the themes of the two pavilions, Hau said.
The ideas were chosen from 113 architecture and design ideas submitted by 87 cities from around the world, he said.
"We are very proud to present our experiences in these areas to the world," he said.
In recent years, the Taipei government has appealed to its employees to use the Internet for some of their daily errands, rather than driving their cars to the shops and filling up the city's roads, Hau said.
The city has also managed to reduce its garbage output by 60 percent, he said.
"By 2010, we hope all resources will be reused and there will be no pollution caused by garbage," Hau said without elaborating.
Taipei's participation in the Expo will set a good example for future communication across the Taiwan Straits and will be mutually beneficial, Hau said, without giving details.
Tuo Chung-hua, deputy director of Taipei's urban planning department, and Hong Hao, director of the Shanghai World Expo coordination bureau, signed the contract.
Before the signing ceremony, Han briefed Hau on Shanghai's urban development program and the challenges the city will face in the future.
Hau is scheduled to fly out of Shanghai today, after traveling to the airport on the city's maglev train.
