The first giant panda life-time adoption ceremony, since the Wenchuan earthquake, was held on the 26th in Chongqing City. The Deputy Chief Engineer of China Conservation and the Giant Panda Research Center, Huang Yan, said this ceremony marked the beginning of the Wolong Giant Panda Reserve post-disaster reconstruction project.
At the Wolong Giant Panda Reserve, 14 of the 32 sheds were damaged by the earthquake; and among the 63 captive giant pandas before the earthquake, one is dead and one still missing. Currently, the majority of captive pandas in Wolong are being transferred to alternate locations including such as Beijing, Ya'an, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, and Kunming.
