To ensure better air quality, Beijing will ban motor vehicles that fail to meet the European I standard for exhaust emissions during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. And vehicles with even-numbered license plates can use roads only on even-numbered dates. The same goes for those with odd-numbered license plates on odd-numbered dates. In addition, some 70 percent of government vehicles will be banned from the roads. These measures will cut over 70 percent of the city's air pollution.
Beijing currently has 300,000 motor vehicles on the roads that fail to meet the European I standard for exhaust emissions. Over 90 percent of these vehicles are trucks and their exhaust emissions account for 60 percent of air pollution from motor vehicles.
It is estimated that 60 percent of air pollutants in the city come from vehicle exhaust emissions.
