The first group of 680 tourists from the Chinese mainland have started their sightseeing in Taiwan after taking historic cross-Strait weekend charter flights to arrive in the island Friday.

Many of them first visited the Sun Moon Lake, a famous scenic spot on the island familiar to the mainland tourists, during the weekend.

A couple in their 70s said they were excited to realize the dream of visiting the Sun Moon Lake, which they have seen on books only before.

In a restaurant on the lake side, the owner surnamed Chang said he was delighted at the arrival of mainland tourists.

"We have been expecting for the mainland tourists for many years and at last they are here," he said.

Chang said that his restaurant was expected to double its income as the more mainland tourists are coming.

The tourists will visit the Ali Mountain Monday, according to their schedule.

They will stay on the island for ten days. Their trip will cover most famous natural and cultural attractions around the island in Taipei, Kaohsiung, Kenting, Hualien, Ali Mountain and the Sun Moon Lake, among others.

Under an agreement signed by the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation on June 13, mainland tourists can visit Taiwan by chartered flights on weekends from July.
