A group wedding has been planned for 39 couples of lovers from across the Taiwan Strait in early November, organizers said in Beijing Wednesday.

The couples would be selected from online applicants from across the strait, Liao Zhonghao, a spokesman with the Guangdong Shuangxi Cultural Communication Company, one of the organizers, said at a launching ceremony of the event.

According to the schedule, selected couples from Taiwan would be invited to tour Beijing and Hangzhou, two major tourist attractions on the mainland, in September, while those from the mainland would also be able to visit Taiwan for free in November, he said.

A group wedding would then be held for the couples beside the Sun Moon Lake, a renowned tourist destination in Taiwan, he said.

Under an agreement signed by the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation on June 13, mainland tourists can visit Taiwan by chartered flights on weekends from July.

The first weekend charter flights flew across the strait on July 4, carrying excited mainland tourists and Taiwan residents joyful at the shorter and cheaper journey.

Liao said the wedding was expected to further enhance the happy atmosphere across the strait.

People could now log onto www.gdshuangxi.com to register for application, according to him.

The event was sponsored by the cross-strait exchange promotion association of Guangdong Province.
