On July 9, the "Seminar on Buddhist studies in Foreign Languages 2008" began in Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai. More than 100 people from the Buddhist community at home and abroad gathered there and discussed Buddhism in foreign languages. For three days, 87 Buddhist Masters and kulapati will give speeches in foreign languages, including 30 representatives from Taiwan and Hong Kong. The lecture topics are "Chinese Buddhism faces the world" and "The past and the future of China's Buddhism." Speeches will be given in languages spoken in Britain, Japan, South Korea, France, Thailand, Germany, and Spain.
Deputy director of the State Religious Affairs Bureau Qi Xiaofei pointed out in his opening speech that the Chinese Buddhist community not only needs to train qualified spiritual speakers and management; but there is also an urgent need to train foreign exchange experts and foreign language experts, which is the original intent behind holding the Buddhist foreign exchange.
