According to China National Radio, today is the 19th World Population Day. The world population surpassed 5 billion on July 11, 1987. To commemorate this day and to draw attention to the population problem, in June 1990 the United Nations Population Fund named July 11 "World Population Day."
At present, the world population is over 6.7 billion, and this year alone it grew by 73 million. Accompanying population growth are declining water resources, increased desertification, decreasing biological diversity, and many other environmental problems. How to deal with the challenges that population growth brings is a major issue that concerns the whole world.
The UN Population Fund believes that if people practice birth control, the birth rate will decrease dramatically. With a decline in the birth rate, more women can be freed from the burdens of childbirth, and engage in more creative work.
