With the start of five energy-saving construction projects such as those for the existing No. 52 Middle School and No. 31 Middle School in Xi'an, the 2008 Xi'an energy-saving building renovation projects have kicked off.

It is understood that energy-saving renovations of existing buildings began last year in Xi'an – just one part of the implementation of energy-saving and emission reduction projects. Government investment in energy-saving renovation of building facades, school windows, doors, roofs, hospitals and other units will reduce a building's air-conditioning power consumption in summer, heat consumption in winter, and improve the comfort of living. Last year, a total of 17 existing buildings in Xi'an were renovated, transforming an area of 64,800 square meters. Test results reveal that after the renovation, energy consumption per square meter per year has declined by 60 percent from the previous year.

Based on trial renovations last year, this year Xi'an will transform 60,000 square meters of existing buildings through energy saving projects. After rigorous screening, a total of 14 projects will undergo renovation this year, including 10 schools, one hospital, and three government agencies.
