In five days the 2008 Olympic Games will begin; and 20 million environmental protection volunteers, from 16 non-governmental (NGO) environmental protection organizations, including Friends of Nature, Beijing Earth Village, China Environmental Protection Foundation, and Green Homes have taken on an initiative in Beijing on August 3. They will persuade Beijing citizens and environmental protection volunteers to participate in a "car-free day" on August 8 and in a "green travel month" activity for the entire Olympic Games period. These aims to "contribute to a bluer sky for Beijing and more dedication to a green Olympics."
These "car-free day" and "green travel month" activities will ask 20 million volunteers from non-governmental environmental protection organizations to choose public transport and other green transportation methods on August 8 and during the Olympic Games. The activities urge the public to become involved in the green campaign, to choose public transportation, and reduce motor vehicle use; in effect, to ensure smooth traffic flow and make contributions to the Green Olympics. This activity is expected to go on for two months and reduce motor vehicles travel by more than 1 million times.
