The observatory in south China's Guangdong Province predicted Kammuri, the ninth tropical storm of the year, will make landfall along the coast between Shenzhen and Dianbai cities of the province, on Wednesday.
The observatory on Tuesday issued a third-class alert in response to Kammuri.
The storm appeared in the northeastern part of the South China Sea and intensified into strong tropical storm at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
Its eye was then located at 19.7 degrees north latitude and 117 degrees east longitude, about 650 km off the coast of Wenchang City, the Hainan meteorological observatory said.
It was later located at 20.6 degrees north latitude and 115.2 degrees east longitude, or about 255 km to the southeast of Shenzhen, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, packing fresh gales at the center, said the Guangdong Provincial Weather Observatory.
It will move northwest at 10 to 15 km per hour and hit land after sweeping through the offshore waters on the coast of Guangdong over the next 24 hours, according to the forecast.
Gripped by the tropical storm, there were strong winds in the northern part of the South China Sea. It also rained heavily in the southern parts of Guangdong on Tuesday.
Also affected by the tropical storm were Fujian and Hainan provinces.
Observatories in Fujian and Hainan on Tuesday issued maritime warnings.
The storm would be the third to hit China this season, after tropical storm Kalmaegi in early July and typhoon Fung-Wong last week. Source: Xinhua
