Some 715 legal immigrants from the Chinese mainland were recorded in the second quarter of 2008, an increase of 200 over the preceding quarter, according to the figures Monday released by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The figures also showed that 307 illegal immigrants were repatriated in the period, and the end-quarter balance of non- resident workers totaled 98,505, an increase of 8,492 over the first quarter of 2008.

Meanwhile, local resident population was estimated at 552,000 as of June 30, 2008, an increase of about 26,000 from a year earlier, the DSEC said.

In the second quarter of this year, there were 1,093 local live births, up by 1.6 percent over the preceding quarter, with male babies accounting for 55.1 percent, and the number of mortality cases stood at 387 with the major underlying causes of death were "Malignant neoplasms" and "Diseases of the circulatory system", according to the DSEC.

In addition, the Health Bureau of the Special Administration Region received 778 cases of Notifiable diseases in this quarter, an increase of 190 cases over the preceding quarter, including 302 cases of "Hand, foot and mouth diseases", 188 cases of "Varicella (chickenpox)" and 89 cases of "Tuberculosis of lung".
