The county of Wubao in northeastern Shaanxi Province recently found 141.6m thick rock salt. Experts estimate that the county has salt reserves of more than 20 billion tons.

Salt rock exploration in the county of Wubao started in March 2008. They have already drilled 2,459.88 meters into the ground. At 1,900 meters they found a coal-rich methane bed; and at 2,100.7 meters they found an 8.9 m thick layer of coke. At 2,232.94 meters, they saw salt. They have accumulated a rock salt core with the depth of 141.6 meters, of which a single layer of pure salt is 49 m thick.

The salt core laboratory analysis showed that Wubao salt is pure with minimal harmful elements, which makes it an ideal raw material for chemical salt production.
