On August 30, Mudanjiang in Heilongjiang Province held an opening ceremony for the Jingpo Lake World Geological Park. Jingpo Lake has become a world-class scenic area.
Jingpo Lake World Geological Park is in Ning'an, in the southeastern part of Heilongjiang Province, covering a total area of 1,400 square km. The Park includes seven major scenic spots of geological relics: the crater forest, waterfalls, Lava River, Jingpo Lake, the lava mesa, the North Lake and Hamatang volcano.
The Jingpo Lake volcanic group has been active three times: 12,000 years ago, 8,300 years and 5,140 years ago. The lava plugs the ancient channel of the Mudanjiang River, forming the world's largest volcanic lava barrier lake. After a million years, the soil of the crater turns into rock and trees grow from it, stretching dozens of kilometers to form the "underground forest" - crater virgin forest.
Mudanjiang City proposed the Jingpo Lake national geological park in 2004; received an investment of 80.1 million yuan for projects to protect the geological relics and infrastructure construction; and the park was approved in September 2006 by UNESCO.
