According to State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters statistics, as of August 31, disasters caused by floods had caused a direct economic loss of 72.1 billion yuan, much lower than during the same period in previous years.
The statistics show that during the first three quarters of this year, as a result of floods, 6,627,000 hectares of crops were affected, 35,841,000 hectares were damaged (refers to the crop areas on which the actual annual output is 30% less than the usual year), 436 people were killed, and 370,000 houses had collapsed.
Compared with the average number within the same period in the years since 1991, the death toll caused by floods this year decreased by by 79% and the disaster-stricken crop areas were down 44%.
