A gas explosion at a coal mine in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Tuesday afternoon killed one and left four others trapped underground, a local government spokesman said.

The accident happened at about 4:40 p.m. at the Hengda Coal Mine in Yiliang County of Zhaotong City.

One injured person was rescued and taken to hospital, and rescue efforts were underway for the four trapped people.
