Typhoon Sinlaku has killed at least four people and left other seven missing after making landfall in Taiwan since Friday, according to a local tally on Monday by a disaster prevention organization.
In Miaoli County of north Taiwan, two people were buried in a mud-rock flow and another man plunged into the sea while riding a motorcycle. A bridge collapse in Taichung County on Sunday night killed another.
Hsinchu, Changhua, Nantou, Yilan, Matsu were less affected by the storm as of Monday, according to local weather bureau, adding Taoyuan, Taipei and keelung were still on alert. It also predicted rainstorm in parts of Miaoli and the mountainous region of Taichung.
Work and classes were resumed in most cities and counties in the island on Monday. Traffic was heavy during rush hours in Taipei though the city was still watching out for the storm.
The island would be completely off the influence of Sinlaku after Tuesday when it went northeastward, local weather bureau said.
Typhoon Sinlaku, the 13th tropical storm so far this year in China, hit northeastern Taiwan at 1:50 a.m. on Sunday. The storm has caused a power blackout, water supply cut and work suspension on the island.
Several roads in Yilan and Chiayi were interrupted and water supply for about 36,900 families were cut off.
Typhoon Sinlaku has already caused the island's agricultural loss at 215 million New Taiwan Dollars (66.65 million US dollars), according to the latest statistics by local authorities.
Influenced by Typhoon Sinlaku, heavy rains were reported in eastern and northern parts of Zhejiang and central and northern parts of Fujian in the mainland on Monday morning and then slashed the suburbs of Shanghai in the afternoon.
Heavy rains and rainstorms were also reported in east Jiangsu Province since Sunday and may likely to continue in the southeast part of the province until Tuesday, local weather authorities reported.
Meteorological authorities estimated the impact of Sinlaku on the east provinces would be less severe after Tuesday.
China's Ministry of Transport had already sent eight rescue boats to the East Sea in case of any emergency, according to ZhengJian, an official with the ministry on Monday.
The Fujian provincial headquarters for flood control said on Monday morning that nearly 230,000 people had been evacuated as of 9 p.m. on Sunday and the mass evacuation was still under way.
