"It is still safe to invest in Sichuan after the earthquake", said Huang Xiaoxiang, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province, in the news conference for the 9th Western China International Economy and Trade Fair on September 23, 2008.
"Most of Sichuan quake-hit areas are located in the remote mountainous villages or rural areas, and the impact of the earthquake to the heavy industry was not big. CEOs from more than 20 of the first 500 multinational companies were invited to inspect the investment environment of Sichuan after the earthquake. All of them made up their mind to invest or increase their investment in Sichuan after that," Huang said.
Huang also expressed that the economic losses of the earthquake was 1.1 trillion yuan, and the rebuilding work needs as much as 1.6 trillion yuan. But the money coming from all levels of governments just covers 20 per cent of the need. The rest of the fund must come from social investment, among which the private capital will play a key role.
