Typhoon Hagupit, which killed 10 people in south China since Wednesday when it made landfall, was downgraded to a severe tropical storm and moved into Vietnam on Thursday morning, the local observatory said.

The deteriorating storm moved into northern Vietnam at 8 a.m. with winds of 43.2 kilometers per hour in its eye, according to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regional Meteorological Observatory.

Torrential rain hit many parts of Guangxi on Thursday, with the area still under the influence of low pressure, it said.

Hagupit, the 14th strong typhoon this year, landed in Maoming, Guangdong at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday with winds of more than 172.8 km/hr in its eye.

According to the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, floods and high winds affected 8.73 million residents and 400,000 hectares of crops in southern Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
