Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's chief of staff David Epstein quit his job on Friday and he will be replaced by Alister Jordan, said a close adviser to Rudd.

Epstein announced his resignation following weeks of rumors the political veteran was set to resign. He became chief of staff for Rudd in opposition in May 2007.

Jordan, 29, has been with Rudd since his days as opposition foreign affairs spokesman and is seen as a close confidant of the prime minister.

Epstein's resignation follows the decision by Labor national secretary Tim Gartrell to leave his post earlier this month.

In a statement to the press, Epstein said he wanted to spend more time with his family while Rudd praised his outgoing chief of staff.

"David's professionalism and experience were vital ingredients in establishing a new Australian government," Rudd said.
