China's lowest inland point is the Ayding Lake in the Turpan depression of China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, 154.31 meters below sea level, according to the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM).
Li Weisen, deputy director general of the SBSM, said Ayding Lake was also the world famous depression; its location and altitude had undergone some changes since 1979 due to the use of modern surveying technologies and changes in the environment and geological structure.
