The Ministry of Environmental Protection and the National Tourism Administration have approved the establishment of China's first pilot national park - Heilongjiang Tangwanghe national park.
China's existing national forest parks, national geological parks, state-level nature reserves are more emphasized on the protection of natural resources, and many of them do not receive a large number of visitors. But along with the protection of natural resources, the National Park also enriches tourism, enabling the public to be able to share these natural resources.
Located at the south of Lesser Hinggan Mountains, Tangwanghe is the source of Tangwanghe River, a primary branch of Songhua River. The whole scenic area covers over 20,000 hectares and the vegetation coverage exceeds 99.8 percent.
The Korean pine originates in this region. And China has 60 percent of the world's Korean pines, while this region has 70 percent of China's Korean pines. Tangwanghe's mixed coniferous and broad-leaf forest, with Korean pine representing the majority, is the most intact and typical virgin Korean pine forest in Asia. There are also more than 100 rare species of trees in this area such as dragon spruce, fir, white birch and bass.
