According to a report released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China on November 3, there were 293.5 million people employed in China's urban areas in 2007, 198.36 million more than in 1978, or a growth of 2.08 times, making an annual increase of 6.84 million people on average during last 30 years since the reform and opening-up.
Compared to the net increase of employment before the introduction of reform and opening-up, there has been an increase of 2.76 times in China's urban employment, equal to the total number of people employed in the US, the UK and Canada in 2005.
The report also shows that, at present, every five people of working age only need to support less than two children and senior people, which means 'a golden period' in the age structure of population. This age structure will be greatly conducive to the sustained and rapid social and economic development.
