UN aids reconstruction in Wenchuan quake-hit areas

This autumn and winter, the United Nations (UN) agencies launched a UN China Appeal for Wenchuan Earthquake Early Recovery Support around the world. To date, over US $18 million has been raised from Canada, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, the European Union and Luxembourg.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has built 72 makeshift classrooms for 39 primary schools in the remote areas of Gansu Province to insure that 5,000 school children receive regular instruction.

The organization also established 40 "Child Friendly Spaces" in Sichuan to provide psycho-social assistance to 10,000 homeless children.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) is helping the area with the reconstruction of 1,000 small enterprises damaged by the earthquake, and building 700 new small enterprises.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been providing seeds, equipment and technical training to farmers in two villages in Shifang County in Sichuan Province.
