In 2007, the population's basic scientific literacy rate in China was 2.25%, which was 0.27% higher than 1.98% recorded in 2003. This is according to the main results of a 2007 survey on scientific literacy for Chinese citizens released on November 16 by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST).
The survey respondents were adult citizens aged between 18 and 69 from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
The survey results indicate that in 2007 the population's basic scientific literacy rate was 2.25%, 0.27 percentage points higher than 1.98% recorded in 2003. In 2007, 18.4% of citizens understood scientific terminology, and 33.5% were familiar with scientific ideas.
Furthermore, 6.9% of citizens were familiar with scientific methods, and 59.4% understood the relationship between science and society.
