During the three decades since reform and opening-up, the scale of the restaurant and catering industry in China has maintained rapid growth. The number of restaurant and catering enterprises in China is already more than 4 million, which is 100 times that of 1978. Employees in this industry total almost 43 million. The retail sales surrounding accommodation and catering in China in 2007 reached 1.2352 trillion yuan, which is 225.4 times the 5.48 billion yuan reached in 1978.

According to an analysis report from the China Hotel Association, three decades after reform and opening-up, the restaurant and catering industry in China has taken a great leap forward in development.

The degree of internationalization has been greatly enhanced, and to date, nearly 70 restaurants of international brand, and more than 40 hotel management groups including ones ranking among the world's top 10 have already entered the Chinese mainland market.

The businesses are diverse and include tourist hotels, business hotels, apartment hotels and resort hotels which are developing quite quickly. Green hotels and restaurants are becoming progressively popular. New concepts like environmental friendliness and energy saving as well as new technology and new materials are being applied widely. Chain-store operations have prompted the fast expansion of these enterprises.
