Wang Haiping, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, said on November 19 that the municipal government will not take measures such as controlling the total number of vehicles, restricting residents' purchases of automobiles and restricting issuing license plates to ease Beijing's traffic problems.
Wang said Beijing will put major efforts to develop rail transit public transport to reduce traffic jams.
Beijing plans to invest a total of 90 billion yuan on rail transport construction from now to 2010, and to make the city's total length of track to 300 kilometers, including 100 kilometers of newly-built rail tracks.
