As winter approaches, post-disaster reconstruction in the earthquake-stricken areas of Sichuan Province is underway in an intensive and orderly manner. Thousand volunteers from the "Special Task of Earthquake Relief by Volunteers from the College Graduates Serving the West Program" have joined the effort.

After the May 12 Wenchuan earthquake, the Central Committee of Communist Youth League of China, the PRC Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security jointly launched the emergency "Special Task of Earthquake Relief by Volunteers from the College Graduates Serving the West Program" and 1,090 college graduates were sent to Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi and the Chongqing Municipality for post-disaster reconstruction volunteer work for a one-year period. This is a special operation newly added to the regular annual recruitment of volunteers.

The "College Graduate Volunteers Serving the West Program" had been in place for 5 years, and was previously focused on recruiting fresh college graduates to work as volunteers in impoverished counties and towns in China's west annually. Some of the volunteers have now chosen to remain and continue to work at the volunteer locations. In Qingchuan County of Sichuan Province alone, 47 out of the 222 volunteers, who have been serving in the area, have chosen to stay.
