Four policemen stood trial on Monday in the northeastern Heilongjiang Province charged with beating a suspect to death during interrogation.
Another policeman connected to the case was on the run.
The case was heard in the People's Court of Qing'an county, Suihua city. The cops from Qing'an police bureau were charged with beating a suspect, Li Xiangfu, of a robbery and murder case in May2000 with plastic and wooden sticks, and confining him with shackles, which allegedly caused Li's death.
Later, the policemen were accused of having faked the signature of the suspect in order to avoid punishment.
After the police were arrested in May, the inspector general who was in charge of the case was allegedly beaten on the street three months later by two gangsters hired by Zhang Guangfu, vice director of the Qing'an police bureau.
Zhang was also arrested and will be on trial in a separate case.
Trial of the four police started at 9 a.m. and lasted for more than ten hours. Source: Xinhua
