Five regional airports will be built or rebuilt in five cities in Xinjiang: Yining, Turpan, Kuche, Shihezi and Bole. Together with the phase III reconstruction and expansion project of Urumchi International Airport, the reconstruction and expansion project of Kashi Airport and the re-opening of Hami Airport, there will be eight airports under construction in Xijiang over the next two years.
At present, in Xinjiang, there are already 13 operational airports while one airport has temporarily suspended operation. It is expected that in 2010, the number of Xinjiang airports of various types will reach 17, making it the province with the largest number of regional airports in China.
Completion of these projects will result in the emergence of a circular aviation network, one with Urumchi International Airport at its center and spreading to all operating regional airports situated in the areas of North Xinjiang, South Xinjiang and East Xinjiang.
Especially after the completion of the phase III reconstruction and expansion project currently underway, Urumchi International Airport will become an important international aviation hub connecting China with Central, West and South Asia and linking Asia with Europe.
