An officer from the Ministry of Environmental Protection recently said that the special fund of 500 million yuan for rural environmental protection, allocated from the 2008 central budget to support the improvement of the overall rural environment, has already been distributed to various locations.
Six hundred villages facing severe environmental problems will receive assistance, and 100 villages and towns aiming to become ecologically sound will receive rewards directly benefiting a total of 4 million people.
Through a process of examination and selection, of the 500 million yuan in the special fund for rural environmental protection, about 450 million yuan will be used for 600 villages as an improvement fund to guide and promote overall rural environment treatment projects. Meanwhile, about 50 million yuan will be used as rewards for 100 villages and towns to support construction works in the move to becoming ecologically sound.
