At present, the total number of Chinese students returning home after studying abroad has surpassed 300,000. The vast numbers of people coming back after studying abroad, including postdoctoral researchers, have made extraordinary contributions in boosting scientific and technological innovation and social economic development in China.
The comments were made by Wang Xiaochu, vice minister of China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, during the Fifth Domestic and Foreign Professionals Exchange and Technical Projects Conference in China's Shandong Province held on November 26.
Wang said that according to incomplete statistics, by the end of 2007, the total number of Chinese students returning home after studying abroad had reached 319,700 people. Following 20 years of hard work, China's postdoctoral system has also made remarkable achievements. As of June this year, China had already set up 1,796 postdoctoral research centers located in educational institutes and 1,670 off-campus postdoctoral research centers, with a total student enrollment of 55,600 people.
