The 2008 annual meeting of the China Animation Association was held in Guangzhou on December 3.
It is learned that the domestic animation industry has made rapid development in areas including animation output, art quality, animation production technology, sound effects, market environment, industry structure and education in recent years. The production of domestic animation is expected to exceed 120,000 minutes this year.
According to statistics, China now has 5,473 animation art production studios, and the output of domestic cartoons has increased from 12,000 minutes in 2003 to 100,000 minutes in 2007, and is expected to exceed 120,000 minutes this year. China now produces about 10 domestic animation films every year, increasing from one to two films per year in the past.
An even more rapid development has been seen in animation arts education. Four hundred and forty-seven colleges across the country have established animation arts departments in 2007, increasing from 237 in 2005. The number of students studying animation arts at those colleges has reached 500,000, far exceeding the number in countries with developed animation industries such as the US and Japan. However, China-made animation products are still lacking in originality.
