"Ingenious Woodwork - Macao Religious Figure Carving", an exhibition organized by the Macao Museum, was unveiled in Macao on Thursday, which showcases Macao's time-honored handicraft to the public.
The exhibition displays more than 80 exhibits, including carved figures from Buddhist, Taoist and Chinese folk beliefs. Carving tools, wood samples and historical data are also featured to enable a better understanding of the religious beliefs of the locals.
The hundred-year-old traditional handicraft has passed through various stages of development although it has been in decline for some time, and "fortunately, it has survived the impact of modernization," said Heidi Ho, president of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administration Region (SAR).
She also said that this fine wood carving art is undergoing substantial development through continual innovation these days.
In June 2008, the "Macao Religious Figure Carving" was inscribed on China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage List, thus becoming Macao's first independent application to receive such an honor.
To protect the traditional handicraft, the Macao Museum also established a task force last year to survey the status of religious figure carving in Macao, according to the Bureau.
