Nine people died and three were injured after a bus plunged into a reservoir in a southwest China city on Thursday night, police said on Friday.

The bus, from southwest China's Sichuan Province, was traveling too fast when it fell off the highway into a reservoir in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province, at around 11:00 p.m., police said.

The bus, with 43 seats, carried 12 people, including three drivers. When the accident happened, the driver was 53-year-old Lu Yiwei who survived while the other two drivers died at the site.

Rescue work started a few hours later and nine bodies had been found in the reservoir as of 2:00 a.m., police said.

The injured had been sent to the hospital.

Further investigation is still underway, police said.
