For a long time in China athletes had difficulties in finding jobs after they retired. But the situation is changing now as local authorities have begun to take efforts to solve the issue.

A number of training courses for retired athletes have been launched last month in Changchun, capital city of northeast China's Jilin Province. A total of 75 retired athletes received training - free of charge - in various fields such as legal service, marketing and finance.

"It is the first training program of its kind for retired athletes," said Chen Zhiyuan, chief of Jilin's Professional Skills Identification Centre for Retired Athletes.

"Our efforts have begun to bear fruit," he added.

According to Chen, 69 of the 75 retired athletes completed their courses and obtained graduation certificates, and 10 have already started their own businesses.

In return to the government's help, retired athletes who have started businesses are requested to give priority to other retired athletes if they want to recruit employees.

"So such schemes will ease the pressure largely," said Chen.

More than 40 percent of the retired athletes could not find suitable jobs every year in China due to lack of expertise.
