The results of the 2008 national survey on disabled people were released on Dec 11. According to the report, medical aid still remains as what is needed most by disabled people, followed by living aid, rehabilitation aid and education aid.

The survey also shows that the overall living conditions of the disabled in China have improved, but it is still far behind the social average. The disabled are facing lots of difficulties such as medical care, rehabilitation, education, employment and participation in social activities.

The per capita housing area for the disabled families is 19.6 square meters, only 77.6% of the social average of 25.2 square meters.

The housing conditions for the disabled have improved since 2007 thanks to the renovation of old houses and policies on low-rent houses for the disabled.

Although disabled families have seen a big increase in per capita disposable income compared to that last year, it still only stands at 58.7% of social average. With regard to consumption structure, the costs of medical and health care for disabled households are much higher the national average.
