The China part of "Earth Hour 2009," a global initiative by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to combat climate change, kicked off Monday in Beijing.

Government officials and people from companies and schools as well as individuals attended a ceremony in Beijing on Monday calling the public to switch off lights for one hour at 8:30 p.m. March 28, 2009, the Beijing News reported.

Earth Hour 2009 aims to reach 1 billion people in 1,000 cities around the world. The event was initiated in Sydney, Australia, in2007. About 50 million people in 370 cities and towns worldwide joined the initiative the following year.
