Shan Rongxia, a mother charged with fatally abusing her 4-year-old son, was sentenced to 11 years in prison by a court in Shanghai on Tuesday.

Her husband was also given a seven-month sentence for colluding in destroying evidence of the crime at the same trial held by the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.

The 25-year-old mother from east China's Anhui Province fatally abused her son on May 29, because she was annoyed that the child wet his bed.

Shan's lawyer defended her by proposing a court psychiatric analysis on her limited capacity for duties when she cruelly kicked her son.

The request was rejected by the court, which held Shan was sober-minded even after she was aware that her son was dead. She called her husband and suggested dumping her son's body to a deserted place.

The boy's body was found the next day. An autopsy report suggested he died from a rupture of the liver.
