To express appreciation for the care and support of all sectors of society for the People's Daily and the People's Daily Online, the foreign affairs department of the People's Daily collaborated with the People's Daily Online to hold a New Year's gala party on the afternoon of December 18.
During the party, Zhang Yannong, president of the People's Daily, delivered an impassioned speech. He said, "This year is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Daily. The People's Daily could not have developed without the support of our friends at home and abroad. Today, we have so many foreign friends gathered here together. We connect with old friends and make new friends. The People's Daily would like to expand friendly exchanges and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with the media outlets of other countries, and make concerted efforts to build a harmonious world characterized by lasting peace and prosperity."
Alimov, the Ambassador of Tajikistan to China, said during his speech that at the same time each morning, just like all the other numerous readers, he reads the People's Daily and browses through the pages of the People's Daily Online to obtain colorful, important news about China and the world. These are all very important to an ambassador, he said. He also said that good-neighborly and cooperative relations between Tajikistan and China have rapidly developed in 2008, and the People's Daily and the People's Daily Online both played important and positive roles in the development of the two countries' good-neighborly relations.
After the gala party, Chinese and foreign guests watched a stage play, "The Peach Blossom Land," directed by and starring the staff of the People's Daily Online. The staff's splendid performance made a favorable impression on the foreign guests. More than 100 guests including Ma Li, the newspaper's deputy editor-in-chief, Rashid Alimov, the Ambassador of Tajikistan to China, press officers from foreign embassies in Beijing and foreign media officials in Beijing attended the party.
