 Guo won the gold medal in the event with a score of 415.35 points during the women's 3m springboard final at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in the National Aquatics Center, also known as the Water Cube in Beijing, China, Aug. 17, 2008. A latest survey released on December 28 shows that China's "diving queen" Guo Jingjing was chosen by Hong Kong primary school students as their favorite athlete.
With 3,640 valid votes collected, the statistics show that the top ten popular athletes are, in order, Guo Jingjing, Liu Xiang, Lin Dan, Yao Ming, Yang Wei, Cheng Fei, Li Ching, Wong Kam-po, Ko Lai-chak and Wang Chen.
Among which, the top six are all from Chinese mainland, and the rest are Hong Kong athletes. The students who participated in the voting said the standard of choosing is mainly based on the athletes' popularity and level of media coverage.
In addition, the survey shows that 50% of the primary school students said they have become more interested in sports after watching the Olympic Games.
The Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong announced the results of the survey, entitled "My Favorite Athlete," which was carried out among primary school students from Grade One to Grade Six in Hong Kong's Tsing Yi District in November.
