In the eyes of Beijingers, real estate industry and food industry in China have lowest credibility, a recent survey finds.

The School of Statistics at the Capital University of Economics and Business issued the "Eight Major Indexes of the Social Survey of Beijing in 2008." After the first two surveys in 2006 and 2007, this was the third time that social survey indexes of Beijing were distributed. The aim of the survey was to demonstrate the socio-psychological state of Beijing citizens and the changes to their mental state.

The eight major indexes of the survey are: "social credibility," "social harmony," "citizens’ sense of security," "satisfaction with public services," "confidence in government honesty," "resources conservation," "citizens’ feelings about their living environment" and "citizens' sense of happiness."

Among them, the "social credibility index" in 2008 displayed a curve from high to low and corporate credibility decreased considerably. According to statistics from the June survey, the citizens' degree of satisfaction toward government and enterprises increased a great deal, reaching 88.7 and 79.1 respectively. The high ranking was due to government and enterprises' outstanding performances in coping with the frost disasters in southern China during the early 2008, their preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as their meticulous relief efforts after the Wenchuan earthquake.

However, the Sanlu milk powder incident dealt a huge blow to the public. 78.2% surveyed believed the negative impact of the Sanlu milk powder incident to be very severe or extremely severe, causing all credibility indexes of the November survey to decrease.

Following the Sanlu milk powder incident, the credibility of the food industry ranks second to last, and the credibility of the housing industry is the lowest.

In addition, the lack of corporate credibility has become a systemic malady. Statistics from three years of surveys show that the government's credibility is higher than corporate and individual credibility. After experiencing the frost disasters, the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan and the Olympic Games, public trust in the government reached its highest level. Despite the subsequent negative impact of the Sanlu milk powder incident, the government's credibility ranking continues to remain above corporate and individual credibility.
