Salaries in China's tier 1 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen were noticeably higher than tier 2 and tier 3 cities, and Shanghai still tops the list of salary rankings for 2008, data released by Zhaopin.com, a major recruitment website, shows.
Salary gaps between Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen grew smaller, with Shanghai still topping the list. Salary levels in Beijing and Shenzhen were very close, ranking second and third, respectively. Guangzhou was slightly lower than Beijing and Shenzhen, coming in fourth.
Salary levels for Dalian and Tianjin, both harbor cities, were close, with Tianjin slightly higher than Dalian, ranking fifth place, and Dalian ranking sixth.
In Shanghai, the city with the highest salary levels in China, the average annual salaries of employees ranged from over 20,000 yuan for junior staff employees to 650,000 yuan for executives. In Guangzhou, the salaries varied from over 18,000 to nearly 500,000 yuan.
Various factors have led to the reshuffling of salary rankings industry-wise in 2008. The finance sector, the previous leader, earned only a third-place ranking, and the high-tech industry returned to the top of the list with annual salaries earned by professional skilled personnel reaching nearly 100,000 yuan and annual salaries for talents involved in strategic planning exceeding 700,000 yuan. To everyone's surprise, in a year with big adjustments in the housing market, the salary of real estate professionals increased instead of declining, rising from a third-place ranking in 2007 to second place in 2008.
