Activities at the first Chinese Netizens Cultural Festival began in Beijing on January 6. The date for Netizen Day and its logo, both decided by netizens through voting, were announced. September 14 was ultimately chosen as Netizen Day.
On September 14, 1987, China sent out its first email, "Across the Great Wall we can reach every corner in the world," unveiling the beginning of Chinese use of the Internet.
To inspire the creativity of netizens, the organizing committee of Netizen Day decided to let Internet users choose major elements of Netizen Day, such as the date and logo. The voting process lasted over three months and received nearly 500,000 votes from Internet users. Surveys show that 66.8% of netizens wanted to have their own holiday and 43.97% supported the decision of designating September 14 as Netizen Day.
On April 20, 1994, China officially connected to the Internet. On May 21, 1994, China officially completed the registration of the national top-level domain name (.CN).
