It is currently high season for outbreaks of bird flu, and the situation is severe for bird flu prevention and control.

According to the news office of the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), at present the status of major animal epidemics in China including bird flu is stable, and no epidemics of the highly pathogenic bird flu have occurred in China since June 2008.

The MOA recently issued further dispositions for the prevention and control of an epidemic in response to the current severe situation.

According to the analysis of experts in the MOA, the recent frequent outbreaks of bird flu in neighboring countries such as India and Vietnam pose serious threats to China.

Meanwhile, the circumstances of an epidemic at home would be extraordinarily complicated as well, since the contamination range of bird flu is wide. Risk of the virus being spread through migratory and wild birds has increased.

In addition, scatter feeding is the main form of poultry farming in China further increased the difficulties in the prevention and control of an epidemic. As Spring Festival approaches, more frequent movement of poultry and related products, as well as more active live poultry trade in markets, can quite easily result in the spread of the pathogen.

Based on comprehensive analysis of epidemics at home and abroad, as well as applied prevention and control measures, the overall circumstances for a bird flu epidemic in China will remain stable for a certain period of time. Large-scale outbreaks of an epidemic are unlikely to happen, but dangers of a potential epidemic still exist in some areas.
