In 2008, over 3 million low-income urban families fulfilled their dream of settling down, experts at the National Work Conference on Housing and Urban-Rural Development said.
According to preliminary statistics, in 2008 a total of 35.4 billion yuan was invested in the low-rent housing construction system, equal to 3.7 times more than the investment in 2007. The capital actually invested in the construction of low-rent housing was 28.6 billion yuan and the total amount for rent subsidies was 6.8 billion yuan.
Newly constructed buildings and buildings purchased for low rent housing amounted to 630,000 and 2.49 million families received rent subsidies. This has solved the housing problems of 3.12 million low-income urban families. Recently, construction has begun on 1.3 million affordable houses.
