An earthquake measuring 5.1 on Richter Scale with a depth of 19 kilometers jolted Wenchuan County (31.3°N, 103.2°E) of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province at 2:23 am Beijing Time on January 15.
The quake affected an area within 50 kilometers from the epicenter and large and medium-sized cities within 200 kilometers from the epicenter.
Strong tremors were felt in the urban districts of Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan Province. At press time, there was no report of casualty or property loss.
On May 12, 2008, a 8.0M earthquake struck Wenchuan. It is reported that as of Sept 25, 2008, 69,227 are confirmed dead, 374, 643 injured, with 17, 923 listed as missing in the earthquake.
