The Judiciary Police (PJ) of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Thursday announced that a total of 11,291 criminal cases were reported here in 2008, an increase of 13.41 percent over the 9,956 cases in 2007.
Although the PJ recorded more criminal cases last year, local public order remained "stable", said Wong Sio Chak, director of the PJ, at a conference here.
However, he still said that the PJ will pay special attention to the prevention of serious crimes, as Macao's staple gaming industry was severely hit by the global financial crisis, which might lead to social unrest.
Macao's police department is comprised of Judiciary Police and Public Security Police. The PJ is in charge of the investigation of serious criminal cases while the latter one is bestowed with the responsibility of regulating local public order, traffic and border crossings, etc.
As for the counterfeit RMB banknote issues recently exposed, Wong said the PJ did not record many of such cases last year, and they have already contacted the police departments in the Chinese mainland, so as to collect the relevant information of these fake banknote which will be released as soon as possible.
