Fog in eastern China's Shandong Province caused 21 traffic accidents along a short stretch of highway in less than one hour Wednesday morning, killing five people and injuring six, local officials said.

The accidents happened between kilometer 213 and kilometer 217 of the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway between 9:25 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. and involved 47 vehicles.

Many of the injured required hospitalization, but their extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
