China has become the nation with the fastest growing forest resources in the world, with an increase of 60 million mu (4 million hectare) on average per year.
From the launch of the national tree-planting campaign up to the end of 2008, China had a total of 11.52 million people planting 53.85 million trees.
China's national forestation campaign has become the world's largest tree-planting drive, with the most participants and garnering the most noticeable effects.
In 2008, 540 million people joined the campaign nationwide, planting 2.31 billion trees. The latest estimate by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN shows that China's man-made forests reached an area of 800 million mu (about 53.3 million hectare), accounting for nearly 40 percent of the world's total man-made forests, ranking China first worldwide.
Every year, the world's forested area is reduced by 100 million mu (about 66.6 million hectare).
